These colors were inspired by Odilon Redon whose work in the mid to late 19th century inspired Cezanne and many of the other Impressionists.
The vibrant underpainting served as a scroll for the calligraphic story of lilies and orchids, later corralled into floral shapes by negative painting with black gesso.
